How a rental became a colourful, eclectic home built around the pieces they already loved
Type: The Identity Affair (Interior Makeover) | Location: Mumbai | Size: 4BHK
Scope of the Project
A rental makeover designed around the clients’ existing furniture and a clear mid-century eclectic aesthetic. We worked within the limitations of a rental while introducing architectural details, colour, wallpaper, custom furniture, and Indian-inspired art and textiles to make the home feel personal and layered.
The Client Brief
The clients were moving back from the US with a few pieces they already loved: a big blue couch, a mid-century modern bar cabinet, and a tan leather armchair. The brief was to build the home around these pieces, balancing mid-century modern lines with eclectic Indian details. The home needed to feel colourful, warm, and full of personality without losing the character of what they were bringing with them.
Description Notes
We started at the entrance, refurbishing the main door in the same blue as the sofa, painting the existing foyer unit, creating an arched entryway, and wallpapering the entire section for a strong first impression.
The living area was divided into three distinct zones: living, dining, and a bar and music corner. A long built-in TV unit with floating shelves was designed in parts so it could eventually move with the clients to another home — a practical detail that kept the rental in mind.
The colour palette grew from the pieces they already owned, layering soft terracotta, mustard, and black around the existing blue and tan leather. The bar and music section was completely drenched in blue, with a dramatic gallery wall above the piano. Ikat upholstery, Indian art, and collected details added warmth while keeping the mid-century language intact.
The master bedroom shifted into a softer mood with muted floral wallpaper, a reupholstered existing chaise, black side tables and writing desk, and Art Deco prints of Mumbai. The kids’ room was more playful, with a green bunk bed and desk unit, mustard accents, scalloped details, polka-dot curtains, and a custom wallpaper filled with the things they loved.
