The Collected Cottage: Bringing the Outside In

The Collected Cottage: Bringing the Outside In

A hillside narrative of curated layers, misty mornings, and the quiet joy of home.

Type: The Mood Affair (Modified Builder Finish) | Location: Nainital | Size: 8 bedrooms Home stay Villa In Ramgarh

Scope of the Project

A complete energy reset for a sprawling architectural project. We focused on the final, most crucial layers, upholstery, wallpapers, lighting, and a curated collection of sculptural objects. By blending British cottage aesthetics with Indian warmth, we transformed a vast structure into an intimate, textural retreat.

The Client Brief

After six years of building her dream homestay from the ground up, the owner felt the architecture was ready, but the soul was missing. She reached out to us to breathe life and warmth into the wide, quiet rooms. The brief was to create a sanctuary that felt both relaxing and invigorating, a home-away-from-home where guests could disconnect from the world and reconnect with the mountains. She wanted a space that looked "collected" over time, echoing the British cottage charm of the hills while staying rooted in its Indian setting.

Description Notes

We began by looking out the windows, drawing the misty Nainital landscape inside through a palette of soft florals and mountain-inspired textures. To bridge the gap between the rugged architecture and the cozy British cottage vibe, we layered the common spaces with hand-picked rugs, custom curtains with delicate trim details, and soft, patterned wallpapers featuring birds and blooms. The goal was to make every room feel like a deep, warm hug, ensuring the transition from the chilly mountain air to the indoor warmth felt like a seamless, nostalgic exhale.

The heart of this project lies in the pause-worthy corners we created across the house. We curated a series of gallery walls and sculptural objects, some quirky, some traditional, to encourage guests to stop, look, and feel. By mixing textural elements like woven cushions and brass lighting with mountain paintings, we created a "collected" look that feels like it has evolved over decades rather than weeks. These small, intentional shifts in accessorization were designed to turn every hallway and seating area into a place of discovery and quiet reflection.

To give each room its own personality, we played with thematic layering, ensuring no two spaces felt the same while maintaining a cohesive hillside story. We mixed soft British prints with Indian textures to create an environment that feels both world-class and deeply local. From the sculptural artifacts to the specific weight of the linens, everything was chosen to ease the guest into a state of rest. It is a house where the smallest shifts in color and print have changed the entire energy, turning a beautiful building into a soulful holiday home.
