A Home Collected Through Stories

A Home Collected Through Stories

How a builder-finish apartment became an eclectic family home layered with colour, craftsmanship, and treasured memories.

Type: The Soul Affair (Modified Builder Finish) | Location: Mumbai | Size: 3 BHK

Scope of the Project

A thoughtful transformation of a builder-finish apartment, where we reworked the flooring and kitchen while layering the home with custom furniture, architectural details, and deeply personal collections. The result is a warm, eclectic space that celebrates family, travel, books, and everyday living.

The Client Brief

The clients envisioned a home that felt expressive, collected, and unmistakably theirs. Drawing inspiration from Indian textiles, handcrafted details, and unexpected colour pairings, they wanted a space that could showcase the stories they had gathered over the years. Designed for a couple, their daughter Ira, and their cat Coffee, the home needed to balance personality, practicality, and a strong sense of belonging.

Description Notes

The design centres around a rich mix of Indian influences and eclectic layering. Neutral Kota-grey flooring creates a calm foundation for bolder moments throughout the home, from the sage-green backdrop in the living room to the striking maroon sofa that anchors the space. In the foyer, a treasured Suzani collected during the clients' travels takes pride of place above a scalloped maroon console, setting the tone for a home filled with meaningful objects and unexpected combinations. Buti prints, handcrafted details, and carefully chosen accents bring warmth and personality into every corner.

At the heart of the living room, an arched bookshelf surrounds the seating area, celebrating the family's love of reading while creating a cosy architectural focal point. Throughout the home, personal collections become part of the design narrative. The most remarkable of these is a multigenerational stamp collection of over 5,000 pieces, painstakingly hand-installed over three days and displayed as a feature wall in the study-cum-guest room. More than décor, it serves as a visual archive of family history, travel, and shared interests.

The bedrooms continue the storytelling. The master bedroom is layered in soft blues, featuring custom-printed wardrobe laminates and hand-painted bird artworks above the bed, while Ira's room combines playfulness and practicality with a bunk bed, hideaway nook, and dedicated book display. The result is a home that feels bold yet comforting, eclectic yet cohesive, and entirely reflective of the family who lives within it.
