How a compact builder-finish apartment was transformed into a colour-led home shaped by ritual, reflection, and individuality.
Type: The Soul Affair (Apartment Renovation) | Location: Mumbai | Size: 3.5 BHK
Scope of the Project
A complete renovation and styling project that reimagined a standard builder-finish apartment into a home rooted in emotion and experience. Through spatial reconfiguration, colour-led design, custom detailing, and personal collections, the home was transformed into a series of interconnected spaces, each designed around a distinct feeling and purpose.
The Client Brief
The family wanted a home that felt deeply personal, expressive, and reflective of the way they lived. Rather than following a singular aesthetic, they were drawn to the idea of creating different moods across different spaces while maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout the home. Colour, art, and atmosphere became central to the brief, alongside the desire for spaces that supported gathering, quiet reflection, work, play, and everyday family life.
Description Notes
The most significant intervention involved absorbing the additional half-bedroom into the living area, creating a larger, more generous social space anchored by a dedicated zen meditation room. Existing structural beams running through the apartment were embraced rather than concealed, becoming part of the architectural language of the home. A swing positioned beneath one of the beams acts as both a functional and symbolic centrepiece, connecting the living room and meditation space while encouraging moments of pause and togetherness.
Colour became the organising principle of the design. Different limewash finishes were used throughout the apartment, allowing each room to develop its own atmosphere while remaining connected through a shared visual language. A bold maroon entrance door and deep navy kitchen establish the palette of the common areas, layered with greens, nude pinks, and black accents. Personal collections, including large Pattachitra artworks and collected pieces gathered over time, were thoughtfully integrated throughout the home, adding depth, memory, and individuality to every space.
Each room was designed around the experience it was meant to create. The master bedroom embraces soft sage, powder blue, and warm neutrals to encourage rest and connection, while the study-cum-TV room adopts a deeper palette suited to focus and flexibility. The daughter's bedroom introduces playful corals, teals, wallpapers, and artwork, while the balcony extends the home's connection to nature through layers of green and striking black-and-white flooring. The result is a home where every space carries its own personality while remaining united through warmth, emotion, and collected beauty.
