How a Portuguese-inspired retreat became a playful, eclectic home full of colour, texture, and character
Type: The Soul Affair | Location: Goa | Size: 4BHK
Scope of the Project
Originally envisioned as a holiday retreat, the villa was completely reimagined into a home designed for slow mornings, long conversations and effortless entertaining. The design takes a quirky, contemporary approach to Portuguese-style architecture, pairing a warm, earthy material palette with playful colour, pattern, texture and handcrafted details.
The Client Brief
The idea was to create a home that felt colourful and full of character without losing the relaxed quality that makes a Goa home special. The common areas follow a terracotta and sage palette, while each bedroom and adjoining bathroom has its own signature colour. Across the villa, wallpapers, varied wall and headboard treatments, patterned flooring, limewash and eclectic furniture create a home that feels collected, inviting and distinctly personal.
Description Notes
The entrance sets the tone immediately, with custom stained-glass panels bringing colour through shifting natural light. An outdoor entrance area leads to a landing with a bookshelf, while inside, a dramatic double-height wallpapered wall rises alongside a beautiful rustic staircase. The combination of stained glass, wallpaper, texture and handcrafted details gives the Portuguese-inspired architecture a distinctly quirky Goa twist.
The common areas are grounded in terracotta and sage, with continuous flooring and textured walls creating a calm backdrop for the more playful details. Patterned borders and inlays woven into the flooring add moments of surprise, while relaxed furniture, fun prints, eclectic lighting and abundant greenery keep the spaces easy and inviting.
Each of the four bedrooms has its own colour story. Yellow, green, teal, and blue with terracotta create distinct moods, while varied wallpapers, wall treatments and headboards give every room its own identity. The adjoining bathrooms continue these colour stories through limewashed walls and patterned flooring, creating spaces that feel connected without becoming repetitive.
Throughout the villa, texture does as much work as colour. Limewash, layered walls, patterned floors, playful inlays and handcrafted details bring depth, while the relaxed furniture and greenery soften the stronger elements. The result is colourful and quirky, but also soothing and deeply liveable.
