The Maximalist Revival: A European-Indian Family Home

The Maximalist Revival: A European-Indian Family Home

How a builder-finish apartment became a richly layered home balancing bold design, hidden technology, and everyday comfort.

Type: The Soul Affair (Modified Builder Finish) | Location: Mumbai | Size: 1,100 sq. ft.

Scope of the Project

A complete redesign of a builder-finish apartment in collaboration with Krishna Architect. From reworking walls, flooring, and bathrooms to integrating custom joinery, automation, and layered decorative details, the project transformed the home into a modern vintage retreat rooted in European influences and Indian craftsmanship.

The Client Brief

Having previously worked together on their rental home makeover in 2020, the clients returned with a far more ambitious vision for their forever home. They wanted a space that felt bold, expressive, and deeply personal while remaining warm and welcoming. Inspired by European interiors layered with Indian influences, the brief called for distinct moods across every room, thoughtful functionality, and a home filled with details that would reveal themselves over time.

Description Notes

We approached the apartment as a complete reinvention, stripping back the builder-finish shell and rebuilding it from the ground up. Walls were reconfigured, bathrooms redesigned, and flooring completely replaced to create a stronger architectural foundation. The foyer became one of the defining moments of the home, anchored by a bold William Morris wallpaper that immediately sets the tone for the layered, maximalist experience beyond. Throughout the house, carefully selected tiles, lighting, hardware, and hand-finished details create a sense of richness without overwhelming the space.

Each room was designed around the personality of the family member who would use it. A flexible TV room doubles as a guest bedroom through a custom Murphy bed solution, while the bedrooms each tell a distinct story. One draws inspiration from Jaipur through soft florals, buti prints, and a romantic palette, while another embraces a bolder aesthetic with deep greens, kilim-inspired accents, and a dramatic wallpapered ceiling. The home balances these varied moods through a shared language of craftsmanship, texture, and thoughtful layering.

Behind the decorative richness lies a highly functional home. Integrated lighting controls, automated curtains, concealed AV systems, hidden speakers, and a television that rises from the living room console allow technology to disappear into the design. The result is a European-Indian maximalist haven that feels deeply personal, technically sophisticated, and designed to be enjoyed for years to come.
